Anthony de Goutière began his career in the early 1950’s, doing an apprenticeship as a watchmaker. This was in an era when if you didn’t have a part, you had to make it, so often, he would cut his own wheels, staffs and pivots. Initially, he worked in London, England, then came back to Canada, to work with Birk’s and Eaton’s. In 1960, Anthony opened up his own store in Victoria BC. The business grew quickly specializing in Swiss watches, clocks and jewellery. Early in his career, Anthony realized there was a great need for gemmological training and became a GG with the GIA, then obtained his CGA through the AGS. Around this time, Anthony’s interest in photomicrography began to grow. Always, an avid photographer it was a perfect fit for him, leading to the publication of books, videos, numerous articles and awards for his unique, dramatic, and fascinating work.

Founded in 1958, The Canadian Gemmological Association is a professional organization that has set the standard for excellence in the science and study of gemmology in Canada. CGA courses provide training for gem and jewellery industry professionals and enthusiasts alike. The professional diploma (FCGmA) program is recognized worldwide. The CGA represents its members in liaison with the government in developing guidelines for the sale and marketing of diamonds, coloured gemstones and pearls, and in the establishment of guidelines for gem and jewellery appraising in Canada.
