Gem Scan Laboratories, a revered name in the diamond and jewellery appraisal industry, has announced its permanent closure effective December 21, 2023. This marks the end of an era for the Toronto-based laboratory, which has been a fixture in the industry for 39 years.
Founded in 1985, Gem Scan Laboratories has played a pivotal role in serving the diamond and jewellery sectors across Canada, the USA, and India. With its presence in five major cities, the laboratory has been at the forefront of witnessing and adapting to significant changes within the industry. This includes the introduction of new grading techniques, advancements in appraisal equipment, and the rise of lab-grown diamonds, which have notably shifted the dynamics of the diamond market.
Andrew Tatarsky, the founder of Gem Scan Laboratories, reflects on the journey, “Our commitment to providing top-notch diamond grading and jewellery appraisals has been a key factor in our success and industry longevity. We are proud of the reputation we’ve built and the relationships we’ve fostered over these four decades.”
While the laboratory operations will cease, the company’s accounting departments will continue to function until January 15, 2024, at their existing address to ensure a smooth transition and closure process.
The announcement has sent ripples through the industry, with many expressing their gratitude and respect for the contributions Gem Scan Laboratories has made. As the industry bids farewell to this iconic institution, Tatarsky extends his warm regards and best wishes for continued prosperity to all their patrons and the broader community.
Canadian Jeweller Magazine salutes Gem Scan Laboratories for its distinguished service and contributions to the industry and wishes the team well in their future endeavours.
