GIA launches Japanese website

Japanese speakers now have access to GIA’s extensive and trusted online content about gems and jewelry at GIA.edu in their native language. The debut of GIA’s website in Japanese is part of the Institute’s continued efforts to educate consumers, gem enthusiasts, researchers, retailers, students and lab clients in Japan about the wondrous world of gems.

“The translation of our website is part of GIA’s commitment to delivering gemological information and instruction in Japan in Japanese,” says Bev Hori, GIA’s chief learning officer and senior vice president of education. “Japan is one of the world’s largest markets for gems and jewelry, so it’s important for GIA to make our educational resources available in this important country. Our website features curated gemological content you won’t find elsewhere on the internet, so translating this information helps us serve the public interest.”

The site will automatically display a language based on the user’s browser preference. A user may select a different language from a drop-down menu, which appears at the top of every site page. The translations include more than 1.8 million words in the Gem Encyclopedia, Analysis & Grading, Professional Education, Research & News and About GIA sections.

GIA launched a redesigned GIA.edu in 2013 as part of its mission to share knowledge and information widely. The Institute fulfills its mission of protecting the public trust in gems and jewelry through professional education programs and beneficiation efforts; gemology research and laboratory services; by supporting more than 100,000 active alumni; and through GIA’s library and museum. GIA’s website supports all of these efforts and has the potential to reach millions more. The site was translated into Simplified Chinese and British English in April 2015.
