Discover the elegance and precision of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Eternal Calendar

A Masterpiece of Time: The Ingenious Design of the Portugieser Eternal Calendar

IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled the Portugieser Eternal Calendar at the Watches and Wonders Geneva event, marking a new milestone in the realm of complex horological achievements. Leveraging decades of expertise in perpetual calendar mechanisms, IWC introduces its first secular perpetual calendar, masterfully incorporating the Gregorian calendar’s intricate leap-year rules. This innovative timepiece not only accounts for the varying lengths of months and leap years but also adjusts for the exceptional leap-year cycle that spans four centuries, a feat achieved through a newly engineered 400-years gear. Additionally, the watch boasts an ultra-precise moon phase display, deviating from the actual lunar orbit by merely one day every 45 million years, thanks to a sophisticated reduction gear.

The Portugieser Eternal Calendar is distinguished by its luxurious platinum case and elegant black alligator leather strap crafted by Santoni. Its design is enhanced by the extensive use of glass, including a glass dial and double box-glass sapphire crystals, offering a glimpse into the watch’s complex inner workings and imparting a sense of elegance and transparency.

This timepiece is a testament to IWC Schaffhausen’s continuous innovation and technical prowess in watchmaking, skillfully bridging traditional craftsmanship with groundbreaking engineering solutions. The inclusion of the 400-years gear, which intelligently omits three leap years over four centuries, and the high-precision moon phase display underscore the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of horological excellence.

Housed within the platinum case is the IWC-manufactured 52640 calibre, featuring a Pellaton winding system that ensures a seven-day power reserve. The movement is meticulously finished, with circular graining and Geneva stripes visible through the sapphire glass case back, highlighting IWC’s dedication to both functionality and aesthetic
