Each September, the waters off Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda transform into a stage for one of the most prestigious competitions in world sailing: the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. More than a regatta, this annual event is a celebration of innovation, human achievement, and above all, teamwork. As the 2025 edition unfolds from 7–13 September, it carries with it an added layer of significance: the event’s four-decade-long partnership with Rolex.
Four Decades of Shared Vision
First launched in 1980 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has grown into an institution in competitive sailing. Rolex joined as Title Sponsor in 1985, establishing a partnership that remains one of the longest-standing collaborations in sport.
This year, the event also pays tribute to His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, visionary founder of the YCCS, who passed away in February. His ambition and foresight created not only an international benchmark in yachting but also a community where tradition, innovation and sportsmanship intersect.

Today, the regatta attracts a fleet of roughly 50 of the world’s most advanced monohulls, each stretching over 18.29 metres (60 feet). They include celebrated entries such as the 31-metre Magic Carpet e, considered among the most technologically advanced Maxis, the 25-metre Capricorno, and the striking 21-metre Scorpione Hormar, reflecting the latest design thinking in competitive nautical engineering.
Teamwork at the Core
Behind every winning yacht is a crew whose precision, trust and communication transform potential into performance. Each race, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Maddalena Archipelago, presents shifting challenges that demand collective focus and resilience. Victory is never the achievement of a single sailor, but the outcome of a team moving as one.
Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, who competed in the first Rolex-partnered edition in 1985, described the enduring impact of the event:
“The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is always the defining moment of the year, where you put all your work on the table. My earliest memories stem from the first-ever event partnered by Rolex, 40 years ago in 1985. It was where I built many of the skills and tools of my profession.”
Cayard’s words capture the essence of what makes the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup extraordinary: it is both a competition and a crucible, a place where sailors refine their craft and pass down knowledge through generations.
Enduring Alliances, Enduring Legacy
Central to the regatta’s prestige is the seamless organization provided by the YCCS and the International Maxi Association (IMA). Supported by Rolex, these institutions deliver exceptional regulatory control and class management, ensuring the highest standards of fairness and competition.

Andrea Recordati, Commodore of the YCCS and a regular competitor, underscores the club’s mission:
“The objective has always been to provide competitors at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup with the perfect platform. From my earliest days at the club, I have admired the way in which the YCCS and our partners Rolex and the IMA have striven to ensure that seamless organization, camaraderie and the pursuit of excellence remain at the core.”
This unique triangle of collaboration—YCCS, Rolex, and the IMA—represents a rare model in modern sport. It has not only sustained the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup for over 40 years but elevated it to a symbol of international excellence.
Rolex and the Spirit of Sailing
Rolex’s involvement in sailing extends well beyond Sardinia. Since the late 1950s, the Swiss watchmaker has championed perseverance, resilience and innovation across the sport. The brand’s portfolio includes title partnerships with 15 major events worldwide, such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, and the Rolex TP52 World Championship. Rolex also supports SailGP, the sport’s most cutting-edge racing series.
At the heart of these commitments lies a philosophy that resonates deeply with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup: success is measured not only in trophies but in the milestones of progress, the mastery of craft, and the pursuit of excellence.

Writing the Next Chapter
For Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, every edition of the regatta is another story in an evolving legacy:
“The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is like a book. Each edition represents a new chapter. Solid foundations were laid in the early years, and it is for those competing now to continue writing the story, living up to the legacy.”
As the 2025 edition sets sail, it represents not only another season of high-stakes racing but a continuation of a remarkable journey. With unmatched collaboration between organizers, sponsors, and sailors, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is destined to remain a global benchmark of excellence for decades to come.
