Potential mining deal helps boost TSX numbers

On Monday, the Toronto stock market saw a solid increase as a result of talks about a high-profile deal in the mining sector.

Stocks in mining and metals rose by four per cent due to speculation of merger between Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B) and Chilean copper miner Antofagasta.

Teck Resources shares closed 11 per cent higher but after markets closed, the company issued a statement denying the merger or any form of a transaction.

The S&P/TSX composite index ended ahead 95.97 points at 14,908.39 while Canadian dollar was down 0.59 of a U.S. cent at 78.78 cents. CJ
