Publishing Principles

Canadian Jeweller Magazine has reported on the Canadian jewellery and watch trade since 1879. These are the principles the newsroom works to.

Who we serve

Our reader is the person running a jewellery business in Canada: the independent retailer, the wholesaler, the designer, the watch specialist, the manufacturer. We publish for their commercial judgement, not for the consumer market.

How we decide what to publish

Editorial decisions are made by the editorial team alone. A story runs because it is useful or important to the trade, never because a company advertises with us, exhibits at Time and Shine, or asks us to run it.

Sourcing

We name our sources wherever it is safe and fair to do so, and we link to primary material such as regulator guidance, government data, company filings and court records, so a reader can check the ground under a claim. Where a source speaks on condition of anonymity, we explain why in the story.

Verification

Facts are checked before publication against the primary source, not against another publication’s report of it. Figures, dates, company names and job titles are confirmed with the organisation concerned wherever practical. Where a claim cannot be verified, we say so in the text rather than repeat it as fact.

Right of reply

Anyone facing significant criticism in a story is given a fair opportunity to respond before it is published, and their response is carried in the story itself.

Separating reporting from commercial content

Advertising, sponsored articles and advertorial are labelled as such and are visually distinct from editorial. Sponsored material is never presented as independent reporting. Advertisers have no sight of editorial copy before publication and no right of approval over it.

Artificial intelligence

AI tools may assist with research, transcription and production. Every story published under our name is reported, edited and approved by a person, and the magazine is accountable for it.

Corrections

We correct errors promptly and visibly. Our approach is set out in the corrections policy.
