Amazon receives 238 proposals for its second HQ

Across North America, cities and regions are vying to host Amazons second headquarters. With 238 applicants, it really shows the amount of interest everyone has in the contest.

Amazon announced last month that they would invest more than US$5 billion and create up to 50,000 jobs for “Amazon HQ2”. The deadline for submitting proposals was Thursday. According to Amazon around 54 states, provinces, districts, and territories in the US, Canada and Mexico were among those who submitted proposals.

Each of the proposals had their own unique strategies to get the second HQ. Some have said that they can offer Amazon billion dollars in tax breaks if they were chosen. New Jersey specifically proposed US$7 billion in potential credits against state and city taxes if Amazon was to locate to Newark and follows through with their hiring commitments.

Others like the mayor of Atlanta used different tactics. The mayor has said in his proposal that if chosen, they would provide 345 acres of industrial land and create a city called Amazon where Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos would be the mayor for life.

Amazon is expected to choose a city that will help them recruit top talent to stay competitive with rivals such as Alphabet Inc’s Google.

They have said that they will make a decision next year.
