These rules apply to everyone who writes, edits or produces for Canadian Jeweller Magazine, whether on staff or contributing.
Gifts and hospitality
The jewellery trade runs on relationships, samples and events, so this needs to be explicit. Merchandise sent for review is returned, or where return is impractical, it is not kept for personal use. We do not accept cash, discounts on personal purchases, or gifts of a value that could reasonably be read as an inducement.
Travel
Where a manufacturer, brand, show or trade body pays for travel or accommodation so we can report from an event, that is disclosed in the resulting story. Accepting travel never carries an obligation to publish, or to publish favourably.
Conflicts of interest
Editorial staff do not hold financial interests in companies they cover, and do not write about a business in which they, or a member of their immediate family, have a personal or commercial stake. Where a conflict cannot be avoided, it is disclosed in the story and the assignment is reviewed by an editor with no involvement.
Advertising and editorial
The commercial team and the editorial team operate separately. Advertising is never a condition of coverage, and the absence of advertising is never a reason for coverage to be negative. Sponsored content is labelled and never carries a staff byline as though it were reporting.
Fairness
We approach subjects in good faith, identify ourselves as journalists, and do not misrepresent who we are to obtain information. We give people a genuine chance to answer criticism.
Plagiarism and attribution
We do not publish another outlet’s work as our own. Where we build on reporting first published elsewhere, we credit and link to it.
Raising a concern
Concerns about a breach of this policy can be sent to olivier@canadianjeweller.com and go to the publisher.
