Hampden Watch, widely recognized as the United States’ oldest family-owned watch company, has officially re-entered the market under the fourth-generation leadership of Daniel Wein. This milestone relaunch, celebrated with over 300 guests at the company’s historic headquarters in Chicago’s West Loop, signals a new direction in heritage watchmaking—one centred on heirloom-grade personalization and innovative design.
Founded in 1922 as the Clinton Watch Company by Hyman Wein, Hampden has maintained a 103-year legacy of independent, family-led craftsmanship and has assembled over 10 million timepieces. The relaunch bridges Hampden’s origin story—tracing back even further to the original Hampden brand established in 1878—with a modern vision led by CEO Joe Wein (third generation) and Brand Director Daniel Wein (fourth generation).

A New Chapter: The Centennial Collection
At the heart of the relaunch is the Centennial Collection, headlined by the Model 1 Sullivan, a Swiss-made automatic timepiece featuring a 38-hour power reserve, Sellita movement, and Hampden’s patented Casecap® system—a first-of-its-kind approach to caseback personalization.
Available in Carbon, Navy, and Parchment dials, the Model 1 Sullivan offers interchangeable casebacks, allowing wearers to alternate between a traditional exhibition back and a fully engraved design without tools.
Introducing the Casecap®: Function Meets Emotion
While caseback engraving is typically an afterthought in traditional watch retail, Hampden has transformed it into a central feature. The patented Casecap® system gives clients a dedicated canvas to engrave handwriting, symbols, illustrations, or even geographic coordinates—etched with deep precision, all done in-house.
“What’s been missing from the personalization category is thoughtfulness,” said CEO Joe Wein, also the inventor of the Casecap. “With Casecap, we honour both horology and sentiment—celebrating the movement and the memory.”
Daniel Wein emphasized the brand’s mission: “Connecting with personal stories is our driving force. This isn’t just about watches—it’s about legacy.”

Design Concierge Service: White-Glove Personalization
Hampden’s Design Concierge offers buyers a professional virtual service to co-create custom engravings, from handwritten quotes to bespoke family crests. One early client, Joseph Lester, gifted personalized watches with a custom family crest to relatives at a reunion. “Most of my brothers said it was the best gift they had ever received,” he recalled.
Why It Matters to Canadian Retailers
As jewellers continue to expand their offerings to include storied international brands with a strong emotional hook, Hampden’s re-entry provides an opportunity. The demand for meaningful luxury and personalization is growing, especially among millennial and Gen Z consumers who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
With its made-in-Switzerland mechanics, deeply American heritage, and personalization-first philosophy, Hampden is positioned to carve out a distinctive space in Canadian watch counters. Retailers looking to differentiate their assortment with narrative-rich, generational keepsakes will find Hampden’s Casecap® and Concierge experience a compelling proposition.
