John Lamont Steps Down from CJA
After 17 years serving Jewellers Vigilance Canada (JVC) in the role of Director of Loss Prevention, John Lamont is stepping down. Fortunately John will continue to serve the Crime Prevention Program (CPP) and the Canadian Jewellery Industry as a consultant and an advisor.
Formerly a detective with the Metro Toronto Hold-up Squad and Director of Loss Prevention with Zales Canada, John has brought great knowledge and experience to the jewellery trade.
CPP was established in 2000 in response to a growing crime problem in the Canadian jewellery industry. Not only was John the founder of CPP, but he was the driving force that sustained, developed and grew the program. One of the keys to John’s success was his ability to forge important and co-operative partnerships which included law enforcement agencies across Canada, as well as the support of John Kennedy and Jewelers Security Alliance of the United States and David Sexton of Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company.
The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) faced a major challenge to find a suitable candidate to succeed John and serve as the new CPP Director of Loss Prevention. Detective Sergeant Don Cardwell, recently retired from the York Regional Police after 30 years of distinguished service, will be succeeding John in this role.
Don finished his career in the hold-up squad but his career included stints in search and rescue, criminal investigations and drugs and vice. Don has been serving with John in a volunteer capacity for the past year and is ready to assume the role as Director.
Whether a member of the CJA/JVC or not, the entire Canadian Jewellery Industry owes a debt of gratitude to John for his service. John’s efforts have literally retired criminals, prevented violent crimes and safeguarded the trade’s assets.
