Galatea, a U.S. jeweller, has unveiled the Momento Pearl, a cultured pearl that features an NFC chip. Near field communication, or NFC, is a set of principles designed for smartphones in order to create a line of communication between one another or similar devices.
The ring is available with an accompanying NFC app into which, according to Galatea, “the user records a message or uploads an audio file.” When the pearl is tapped against an NFC-enabled smartphone, the audio recording is played and imagery is displayed on the compatible mobile device.
According to Galatea founder Chi Huynh, “This is where the future of jewellery begins. A person can ‘live’ in this pearl forever, as it holds the voice and memories of a loved one.”
Galatea has unveiled that it plans on introducing more NFC-enabled jewellery pieces in the near future, including gemstones and diamonds. CJ
