Diamonds Direct® Expands Canadian Footprint with Birks Licensing Agreement

Birks licensing deal strengthens Diamonds Direct®’s retail and digital presence in Canada while paving the way for global expansion.

Toronto, ON – Birks Group Inc. (“Birks”) has formalized a licensing agreement with Canadian brand Diamonds Direct®, a move that strengthens both companies’ positions in the evolving luxury retail landscape. Under this partnership, Birks will operate Diamonds Direct® showrooms in the Greater Toronto Area and oversee national sales through the e-commerce platform.

The announcement follows Birks’ acquisition of the European Boutique business and marks an important step in aligning Diamonds Direct® with one of Canada’s most established luxury jewellery retailers.

A Strategic Alliance in Canadian Luxury Retail

The agreement brings together two respected names: Diamonds Direct®, recognized for its modern approach to bridal and fine jewellery, and Birks, a Canadian institution with a legacy of more than 145 years. By leveraging Birks’ retail expertise and Diamonds Direct®’s global branding strategy, both companies are positioned to capture a larger share of the Canadian bridal and fine jewellery markets.

The partnership has already resulted in two high-profile showroom launches:

  • Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga
  • CF Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke

Additionally, Diamonds Direct®’s affiliated concept, Watches Direct®, has made its debut at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of Canada’s most influential luxury retail hubs.

Leadership Perspective

In a joint statement, Jordan Sutkiewicz and Michelle Ceresney, Co-CEOs of Diamonds Direct®, emphasized the importance of the collaboration:

“The licensing agreement with Birks is an exciting milestone for Diamonds Direct®. We have laid the foundation for the successful operation of the brand with an experienced Canadian retail partner. As part of our global growth initiative, we are evaluating additional licensing opportunities for Diamonds Direct® in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Asia and Europe, as well as for Watches Direct® in the United States.”

Their remarks highlight the dual role of this agreement: cementing Diamonds Direct®’s presence in Canada while also creating a model for global expansion.

E-Commerce Growth and Proprietary Collections

Alongside the retail footprint, Diamonds Direct® is strengthening its digital presence. The launch of DiamondsDirect.ca enables Canadian consumers to explore and purchase collections nationally, while DiamondsDirect.uk extends reach across the United Kingdom.

Of particular note is the debut of the brand’s proprietary engagement ring line, which showcases hundreds of new designs both in-store and online. The move caters directly to the Canadian bridal segment, where customization, variety, and brand trust are increasingly driving consumer decisions.

This hybrid strategy—combining high-traffic physical showrooms with robust e-commerce operations—reflects broader industry trends, where omnichannel experiences are becoming essential to jewellery retail.

Implications for the Canadian Jewellery Trade

For the Canadian jewellery industry, the Birks–Diamonds Direct® agreement signals several important developments:

  1. Consolidation of Retail Power
Birks’ licensing arrangement allows the company to expand its brand portfolio without diluting its own name, while Diamonds Direct® gains access to prime Canadian real estate and retail expertise.
  2. Elevated Consumer Expectations
With both showrooms and e-commerce platforms in place, consumers will expect seamless integration between online browsing and in-store purchasing—a challenge that smaller independent jewellers may find difficult to match.
  3. Competitive Pressure in Bridal and Watches
The proprietary engagement ring line and Watches Direct® concept directly target two high-growth categories. This will increase competitive pressure on both Canadian wholesalers and luxury retailers catering to bridal and watch customers.
  4. Global Benchmarking
The expansion strategy also positions Canada as a launchpad for Diamonds Direct®’s international ambitions. For Canadian jewellers, this underscores the need to adopt global best practices in branding, digital sales, and customer experience.

Looking Ahead

The Birks–Diamonds Direct® licensing agreement represents more than just a retail expansion; it is a strategic alignment that will likely influence the competitive landscape of Canadian jewellery retail for years to come. With the addition of new showrooms, proprietary collections, and a robust e-commerce platform, Diamonds Direct® is poised to become a household name in Canadian bridal and fine jewellery.

At the same time, the global growth aspirations outlined by Sutkiewicz and Ceresney indicate that Diamonds Direct® is not only positioning itself as a Canadian player but as a global luxury contender.

For jewellers across Canada, this development is a reminder of the increasing pace of change in the industry. Success will increasingly depend on agility, brand partnerships, and the ability to deliver seamless omnichannel experiences that resonate with today’s discerning consumer.
