Enough Is Enough: Canadian Jewellers Are Tired of Working in Fear

Another violent robbery. Another reminder that jewellers across Canada are increasingly becoming targets while simply trying to earn an honest living.

According to the Toronto Police Service, four masked suspects allegedly held victims at gunpoint near Spadina Avenue and Bremner Boulevard before stealing more than $500,000 worth of jewellery. One victim suffered minor injuries.

For many outside the industry, this may sound like another crime story.

For jewellers, it feels personal.

Independent jewellers, watch retailers, diamond dealers, manufacturers, and travelling sales representatives across Canada are operating under growing fear and exhaustion. Businesses are investing heavily into surveillance systems, security guards, transportation protection, insurance, and reinforced storefronts — yet violent robberies continue to rise.

Many jewellers now think twice before transporting inventory.

Employees worry about opening and closing stores safely.

Families fear that loved ones working in jewellery retail are becoming targets simply for doing their jobs.

As someone deeply connected to this industry, I have reached a level of frustration I can no longer ignore.

Jewellers are not criminals. We are honest Canadians trying to support families, employ people, contribute to our communities, and preserve businesses that many have spent generations building.

Yet too often, our industry feels forgotten when these crimes happen.

That frustration is exactly why I helped create a national coalition alongside professional lobbyists to bring the concerns of Canadian jewellers directly to Parliament.

Our objective is clear:

To push for stronger protections, tougher consequences for violent repeat offenders, improved support for targeted businesses, and legislative action that reflects the seriousness of organized retail crime.

This coalition is not about politics.

It is about safety.

It is about protecting employees, independent businesses, and the future of Canada’s jewellery industry.

Most importantly, it is about ensuring jewellers across the country no longer feel alone when these incidents happen.

If you are part of the jewellery industry and believe change is needed, I encourage you to contact me directly for more information on joining the coalition.

The industry must stand together now more than ever.
