What will your store pay for gold next spring? How much stock should you carry into 2027, and when should the scrap in your safe go to the refiner? Most owners are answering those questions with a guess right now, and gold has moved too much this year for a guess to be cheap.
On Sunday afternoon at the Time & Shine Jewellery Trade Show, Dr. Moniruz Zaman will give jewellers something better to work with. He holds a doctorate in economics and sustainable mining and owns two mining companies. He also founded Bullion Mart, a Royal Canadian Mint authorized dealer in Toronto that refines jewellery scrap every week. He sees gold come out of the ground and he sees it cross the counter, and he is bringing that view to Toronto.
What will you gain from this session?
Start with a number. Dr. Zaman will share where he expects gold to trade in 2027, based on what he sees in mine supply and trading demand, so your spring buying budget can rest on more than a headline.
From there he moves to scrap. You will hear when it pays to hold metal and when selling it protects your cash, which matters to any store with a few ounces sitting in the safe.
He will also cover what to ask for before you pay for metal. This is where double certification comes in, and he will explain which results to request from suppliers and refiners.
The counter benefits as well. When a customer hesitates at today’s prices, certified purity gives your staff a clear and credible way to explain what a piece is worth.
Then comes the Q&A. Bring your own questions about pricing, scrap and suppliers, and put them to someone who mines, refines and trades gold.
Why does double certification protect your cash?
Double certification means purity is confirmed by two different methods: atomic testing and fire assay. Atomic testing, such as XRF, reads a piece in seconds without damaging it and shows every metal in the alloy. Fire assay melts a sample to isolate the gold. It takes hours, and it remains the most precise test the industry has. ISO 11426, the international standard for gold in jewellery alloys, recommends it for measuring fineness.
The two methods catch different problems. Thermo Fisher, which makes handheld XRF analyzers, advises against relying on portable XRF alone for gold filled jewellery, bars and bullion. Fire assay closes that gap.
The money explains why it matters. Gold sat near $5,800 an ounce in Canadian dollars this week on Bullion Mart’s live price board. At that price, a half percent purity error on 100 ounces of fine gold costs close to $2,900. Counterfeit bars, plated pieces and short scrap settlements usually trace back to a single test that nobody checked a second time.
How will a 2027 gold price forecast change the way you buy?
The large banks expect gold to rise, although they disagree on how far. Goldman Sachs holds a target of US$5,400 an ounce for the end of 2027. Deutsche Bank expects an average of US$5,150, while Canada’s BMO Capital Markets sees a return toward US$5,000 early in the year.
For a jewellery store, that spread is real money. Take 20 ounces of fine gold in scrap. A move of US$300 an ounce is worth about $8,000 in Canadian dollars on that one decision. Knowing which way the market is likely to lean helps you decide whether to buy stock now or wait, how often to reprice, and when to refine. Dr. Zaman will compare the bank forecasts with what his mines and his trading desk are showing him.
Who is Dr. Moniruz Zaman?
Dr. Zaman reads gold as an economist and handles it as a producer, refiner and dealer. His doctorate in economics and sustainable mining shapes how he weighs supply, demand and the way gold is produced. His career has taken him through Singapore, Dubai, London, New York and Toronto, and in 2016 he was a guest speaker at the China Gold & Precious Metals Summit. He received an Enterprise Award from the Transformation Institute for Leadership & Innovation in 2018, was named among 150 Extraordinary Canadians, and won the IFEA Award in 2026.
What does this mean for Canadian jewellers?
Canada has a long record in metal verification. The Royal Canadian Mint developed its Bullion DNA technology so dealers could authenticate Maple Leaf coins at the point of sale, and the Standards Council of Canada lists ISO 11426 in its national standards database. Public Canadian data on how many jewellers use double certification is not available, which is one more reason to hear about it from a Canadian dealer and mine owner directly.
How do I attend?
Dr. Zaman speaks on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 pm at the Time & Shine Jewellery Trade Show in Toronto. A registered trade badge gets you into the session. Attendance is a complimentary invitation on behalf of Canadian Jeweller Magazine, and registration takes about a minute.
Sunday also features Shopify on growing your store online, and the programme includes a watch repair seminar. Since the November show is the last chance to meet suppliers in person before the holiday season, it is worth planning the whole day.
