Zimbabwe set on taking over Rio Tinto Diamonds mine

According to new reports, the Zimbabwe government is set on taking control of the Murowa mine, of which is 78 per cent is owned by Rio Tinto Diamonds.

Zimbabwe local news sources and international headlines are pointing to the fact that the Zimbabwe government is merging all of Rio Tinto’s mines into one large body and will have 50 per cent ownership in it. Rio Tinto hasn’t responded to requests for comments.

The Murowa mine is known for producing around 400,000 carats of large white diamonds every year.

According to Cecilia Gardner, president and CEO of Jewelers Vigilance Committee, who spoke with JCK, “It depends on the structure, who is involved (both individuals and entities) and whether any of those are subject to sanctioning provisions.” CJ
