The Mediterranean Gemological and Jewelry Conference will be taking from on June 27 and 28 at the Divani Palace & Thalasso Hotel in Athens, Greece. This is the first in a series of annual Mediterranean conferences taking place in new and exotic locations each year. The conference in organized by the Independent Gemological Laboratory in Greece and the CGL – Swiss Canadian Gem Lab Inc. of Canada in cooperation with the Association of Independent Jewellery Valuers – UK and the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers.
The conference will include lectures offered by leading independent laboratory gemmologists, appraisers and synthesis experts on a broad range of subjects, including coloured diamonds, pearls, melee and large synthetic diamonds, and colored gemstone treatments. Two of the speakers include Canada’s very own Branko Deljanin and Wolf Kuehn. Other speakers include Dr. Thomas Hainschwang of Lichtenstein, Francesca Peretti of Switzerland, Gail Brett Levine of the U.S., Fazil Ozen of Turkey, Kym Hughes of Australia, and Dr. Joe C.C. Yuan of Taiwan.
The conference will also cover the following topics:
• Production, gemmological characteristics and value of Argyle coloured diamonds
• Testing and identification of melee synthetic diamonds (loose and jewellery) and pearls
• Update on production of synthetic HPHT and CVD diamonds and how to identify and value them
• Characteristics of Mozambique rubies compared to Burma’s rubies, impact the term “pigeon’s blood” has on value of high quality rubies using examples of important gems at auctions
• Practical Workshop organized by CGL–GRS Canada on use of standard (UV lamp, portable polariscope and microscope) and advanced instruments (VIS and Raman spectrometers) in detection of over 50 synthetic HPHT-grown and CVD-grown and treated (clarity and color) diamonds
