Jewellery designer Paul McClure has been named one of the eight winners of the annual Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Visual artists Robert Houle and Micah Lexier join him as the other two artists based out of Toronto that were also chosen for the prestigious award.
Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts, the award recipients also receive a prize of $25,000. McClure is currently the program coordinator of the jewellery design program at George Brown College, which is the largest program of its kind in North America. He is also represented by the Gallerie Noel Guyomarch’H in Monreal.
Houle is a former teacher at the Ontario College of Art and Design while Lexier is known for having organized a major exhibit featuring 221 works of art by 101 artists at the Toronto Power Plant Gallery back in 2013.
McClure told The Star that he plans to use part of his prize money to invest in the work of other Canadian artists. CJ
