Walmart Canada may have paved the way for retailers to start offering free shipping as competition and rivalry is as strong as ever. Walmart Canada introduced their free shipping service last year for online deliveries. An official from the retailer giant said that the company wanted to offer a seamless transition between online and in-store shopping by eliminated a minimum purchase requirement. “It’s not about an e-commerce channel, or about a store channel anymore,” Simon Rodrigue, vice-president and general manager of Walmart.ca, told the Huffington Post. “It’s really about the customer in the middle. If they want to buy online, if they want to buy on the phone, if they want to buy in store, we want to make sure we’re servicing them.” The Walmart Canada website offers over 175,000 items and is planning to launch a new service next month that will allow customers in Ontario to make online purchases and pick them up themselves from designated locations.
