Melanie Eddy creates sculptural jewellery that uses geometry as a tool to explore the relationship of form to the body. She is involved in the jewellery trade from design and manufacturing through critical writing, facilitating creative and professional development.

From her London studio, Melanie combines traditional approaches with new applications, creating sculptural jewellery that uses geometry as a tool to explore the relationship of form to the body. An independent jewellery designer/maker with an individual style of jewellery handmade in precious metals to a very high standard she specializes in a bespoke service.

Melanie is involved in various aspects of the jewellery trade from design and manufacture through critical writing and facilitating creative and professional development. Projects undertaken are research, writing, editorial work, teaching, exhibition installation and facilitating professional development. She has undertaken contracts with institutions and corporations as varied as Swarovski, Transitions Optical, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’ and the British Council when she undertook a two-month applied arts creative residency in the autumn of 2010 at Turquoise Mountain’s Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Trained in Bermuda, Canada, New York and London; she holds an MA in Design: Jewellery from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. She is director of The Association for Contemporary Jewellery, where she was actively involved as Assistant Editor of their newsletter for over 3 years, a licentiate (with distinction) of The Society of Designer Craftsman and is involved in The Society of Jewellery Historians having previously served as Reviews Editor on the Editorial Board for Jewellery History Today, The Society’s magazine. She has taught courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and at a private jewellery school in Islington.

Melanie has been doing work for The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’ since 2007, originally in their Library structuring and cross-referencing archival material, she now manages and coordinates training and professional development programmes and events for the Goldsmiths’ Institute, the training and educational arm of the Goldsmiths’ Centre a new purpose-built facility and charity developed by the Company. A recent project was coordinating Hothouse: The Goldsmiths’ Institute – a creative and professional development programme for emerging silversmiths and jewellers that the Goldsmiths’ Institute delivered in collaboration with the Crafts Council.

Melanie sees her working practice as an example of a comprehensive and industry-tailored approach. Her studio/workshop is based in the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell, London – a visionary new development for the jewellery and silversmithing industries, their allied trades, the local community and the general public.
