According to Reuters, the world’s busiest ice road—located in Canada—is running late due to the unseasonably warm weather. The 400-kilometre route gives access to three mines scattered across the Northwest Territories, which would otherwise only be reachable by air.
The road, which stretches from Tibbit Lake to Contwoyto Lake, is still expected to open in late January. However, if current weather patterns continue, the road’s short period of operation could be cut back even further.
A short-lived season could mean higher-than-normal costs and inconvenience for moving diesel, machines and mining supplies from Yellowknife, which amounted to 9,000 truckloads last year. CJ
