De Beers Group to unveil innovative synthetics detector at Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair

The International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), a De Beers subsidiary, is set to unveil its latest synthetics detection equipment at this month’s Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.

The new PhosView machine analyzes parcels of polished stones to determine whether they contain high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) synthetic diamonds. The device subjects colorless and near-colorless diamonds from 0.003 carats to 1-carat to ultra-violet light.

This method reveals stones that are phosphorescing, or emitting light. This allows users to clearly separate synthetic stones from natural ones, as natural diamonds appear transparent when viewed in this manner.

After stones have been identified as potentially synthetic, users can operate the PhosView’s built-in manipulator arms to set them aside for further analysis.

“With rising concerns in the diamond industry around undisclosed HPHT synthetics, protecting trade confidence is critical,” says Jonathan Kendall, president of IIDGR.

The PhosView instrument, which handles loose stones as well as jewelry pieces, will be on display at the Hong Kong show between September 14 and 18. This technology will also be available for purchase at the show, offering fairgoers a special introductory price of USD $3,700. After this point, the price will increase to USD $4,500.
