Beatrice Shipley Scholarship 2026: Karen Fox and Jenna Siegel Named AGS Scholarship Recipients

A veteran of the CAD bench and a newcomer chasing her first credential — the American Gem Society's two 2026 scholarships trace the full arc of a jewellery career.

A shop manager who can take an engagement ring from sketch to CAD to casting to final polish without the job ever leaving the building. That is who the American Gem Society and the Gemological Institute of America chose to carry Beatrice Shipley’s name in 2026.

What is the Beatrice Shipley Scholarship?

The scholarship honours the woman behind both institutions. Beatrice Shipley — businesswoman, school dean, art gallery owner — provided the financial and managerial backbone when she and Robert Shipley founded GIA in 1931 and AGS in 1934, cashing in their savings to professionalise the jewellery trade. Established in 2019, the award covers tuition for the GIA Graduate Gemologist® program — online or at the Carlsbad campus — plus the AGS Way Course and registration for the annual AGS Conclave.

Who is Karen Fox?

Karen Fox is a second-generation jeweller who works alongside her father, George Fox, GG, CGA, CMBJ, at Fox Fine Jewelry in Ventura, California. As shop manager, she oversees the full creative lifecycle of custom work in-house, from initial design through CAD and casting to the final polish. Her specialty is telling: with more than a decade in CAD/CAM, she recreates antique heirlooms that have become too worn to wear — craftsmanship in service of memory. She is a graduate of the New Approach School for Jewelers and GIA’s Graduate Diamonds program, holds a Design BA, and is a member of the Jewelers of America 20 Under 40 Retailers class of 2026.

“I am thrilled to receive the Beatrice Shipley Scholarship, an incredible honor and a meaningful milestone in my gemological journey as I work toward earning my Graduate Gemologist® and Certified Gemologist® credentials,” said Fox. “Continued education is essential to providing clients with the highest level of expertise, confidence, and service. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to further my education and career with the support of AGS and GIA.”

Who won the AGS Women in Leadership Scholarship?

Jenna Siegel of Argo & Lehne Jewelers in Columbus, Ohio is the 2026 recipient. AGS created the award to support emerging women leaders in the jewellery industry, and Siegel embodies the emerging part: she followed a lifelong interest in jewellery into the trade and is now pursuing her Graduate Gemologist® credential. Her scholarship includes complimentary Conclave 2026 registration, a $500 gift card, and a personalised mentorship experience coordinated by AGS.

“This investment in my future will provide valuable learning and growth opportunities,” said Siegel. “Thank you for supporting the development of my skills and knowledge, which I need to make a greater impact in this field.”

Why do these scholarships matter to the industry?

Put the two recipients side by side and you get a portrait of how jewellery careers are actually built. Fox represents the deep end — a decade of CAD mastery now being formalised with the industry’s benchmark credentials. Siegel represents the entry point — talent arriving from outside the trade and being handed a ladder rather than left to climb alone. An industry that funds both ends of that arc is an industry planning its own succession.

The mentorship component of the Women in Leadership award deserves particular attention. Tuition builds knowledge; a coordinated mentorship builds networks, and networks are what turn promising staff into future owners and executives.

Is there a Canadian connection?

The scholarships are AGS programmes and both 2026 recipients are American; no Canadian recipient data exists for this cycle. The credentials, however, are the same ones Canadian gemmologists and retailers pursue — the Graduate Gemologist® designation carries identical weight in a Vancouver appraisal office as it does in a Ventura showroom. Canadian jewellers watching their own benches should read these awards as a template: structured education funding and formal mentorship are retention tools, and they work.

What happens next?

Both recipients will be recognised at the American Gem Society’s annual Conclave in Orlando, Florida, September 14–17, 2026. Canadian Jeweller will follow their progress through the Graduate Gemologist® program.
