RCMP Warns of Fake Gold Jewellery Scam in Strathcona County

Jewellers urged to stay alert after fake gold jewellery scam targets Alberta residents in parking lots. RCMP warns: if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

RCMP Warns of Fake Gold Jewellery Scam in Strathcona County

The RCMP are warning the public and jewellery retailers of a new street-level scam involving counterfeit gold jewellery. Between May 17 and May 20, four separate reports emerged of individuals being approached in parking lots and on roadways by suspects offering “gold” jewellery at suspiciously low prices.

How the Scam Works

Suspects pull up in newer rental vehicles—sometimes with children on board—and claim they urgently need cash due to a lost or faulty bank card. They offer what appears to be genuine gold jewellery at steep discounts or even propose exchanging pieces for gas money. In reality, the items are worthless fakes.

Key Warning Signs

  • Unsolicited Offers: Approaches occur in high-traffic areas such as parking lots, rest stops and gas stations.
  • Too-Good-to-Be-True Prices: Genuine gold is never sold roadside at rock-bottom rates.
  • Urgent Backstory: Scammers invent personal emergencies to create pressure for an immediate transaction.
  • Rental Vehicles: Perpetrators often use late-model rental cars to appear legitimate.

RCMP Advisory

The RCMP emphasizes: if an offer sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Do not purchase high-value items from unverified sources or strangers on the street. Always buy jewellery from established, reputable retailers to ensure authenticity and consumer protection.

What to Do if You Encounter the Scam

  • Decline Street-Side Offers: Politely refuse any unsolicited jewellery sales.
  • Inform Customers and Staff: Retailers should alert employees and clients to these tactics.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: Contact Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to submit tips anonymously.

This alert serves as a reminder to both the jewellery industry and consumers to remain vigilant. By educating staff, warning customers and reporting any suspicious encounters, retailers can help protect the community and uphold the integrity of Canada’s jewellery trade.
