Spring is the perfect time to tidy up and put away items that no longer have use in your life. Spring cleaning is officially a hot new trend, so much in fact that people are cleaning out their closets at an all-time high. With Marie Kondo taking Netflix by storm, so many people have begun going through their closets to rid themselves of clothing items that no longer “spark joy” or have a purpose. But what do you do about your jewellery box?
Humans collect items, it has always been that way, but jewellery can be tricky. Some trends in jewellery don’t hold the test of time.  What do you do with those family heirlooms that hold sentimental value but don’t connect with your own personal style?
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Simply because you think your old jewellery has served its purpose, doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the road for it. Here are a few tips you can use to make more room inside your jewellery box.
Vintage Finds:
Tired of seeing Grandma’s old pearl necklace take up space and get tangled up? Well, you’d be surprised to know of the various vintage shops that exist and would love to get their hands on it. Empty your jewellery box and fill your pockets by selling or trading your vintage pieces for an item more your style. If you enjoy a good hunt for a bargain, spending an afternoon digging for antique items might be a great way to make some cash or find some hidden gems.
Donate, be great:
Giving back might not bring you the money you desire but it will definitely spark joy in the hearts of others. Let’s face it, you can’t wear all your jewellery all the time. If a piece has been sitting for a long time, you should gift it to a person or organization that might appreciate the item more. Not for profit organizations such as The One More Wear Foundation in Toronto accepts gently used items to give to at-risk youth for job interviews and opportunities. Helping the less fortunate while dressing them with the fundamental tools to be successful.
Repurpose & Remix:
Giving sentimental items new life might be a great alternative instead of selling or donating your jewellery. Melting down your tacky gold pendant into a new style item might be a great tribute to a family member who is no longer living. Even changing a necklace into a pair of earrings could be a fun new way to give your beloved keepsakes more life.
