Award-winning jewellery designer Eric Norris Smith passes away

Norris Smith was prolific in the industry for almost 50 years, first setting up his own workshop in Hamilton, Scotland after graduating from Glasgow School of Art and honing his skills with Hamilton & Inches in Edinburgh.

Since then he developed his workshop business into a booming jewellery and luxury goods emporium with an in-house design and repair workshop, occupying five retail units.

He closed the business in 2018 to retire and sadly passed away less than a year later on April 3.

Norris Smith built a reputation in the early days designing and manufacturing diamond jewellery for more than 120 retail outlets in the UK – 40 of them in London – before launching the business, Eric N Smith Ltd, in the 70s.

His skills were noticeable right from the start, when he won the prestigious De Beers Diamond International Award while still a student in Glasgow.

In 2013 he completed a project to restore the Glasgow jewellery mark which had been first struck 50 years earlier.

The internationally recognised stamp of quality was a combined tree, bird, bell and fish, based on Glasgow’s coat of arms.

Eric is survived by his wife Yvonne, sister Carol-Anne and nephew, Fraser.

Canadian Jeweller Magazine would like to send our deepest condolences to The Smith Family and his friends.
