TORONTO, ON (January 3, 2019) — The Canadian Gemmological Association (CGA) announced today that its President, Donna Hawrelko, has won the prestigious Antonio C. Bonanno Award for gemmological excellence. Her win comes on the heels of also receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award at the CGA Conference in October 2018.

“This award means so much to me,” said Hawrelko.“Being recognized by my peers is such an honour, and I am so grateful for the acknowledgement.”

Donna Hawrelko is a Fellow of the Canadian Gemmological Association as well as a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. The Bonanno Award recognizes her significant contributions to gemmological education and training. Her decades of commitment to her students have been unsurpassed, as well as her pursuit to elevate the rank and status of gemmology in Canada and around the world.

“The last few years have been momentous for gemmology in Canada,” said Hawrelko. “Last year we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the CGA and now we are kicking off 2019 with this great honour.”

The Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) announced that the winners of this year’s Antonio C. Bonanno Award would be celebrated at their annual conference in Tucson, Arizona next month. Hawrelko will join the other award recipients, Alberto Scarini, Mikko Astrom and Dr. Karl Schmetzer at the AGA award ceremony.
