Pretium’s $450-million Brucejack gold mine has been approved by the B.C. government. This is the first such project to be given the green light since the collapse of the Mount Polley mine tailings dam last year and it’s expected to create 500 new jobs.
Construction for the mine is expected to begin this summer and full commercial production is set to start in 2017. The two-year construction period will make way for 500 new jobs and about 300 permanent jobs during the project’s total duration of 16 years.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, unlike the Mount Polley mine, the Brucejack gold mine will not have a facility to store mine waste held back with an earth-and-rock dam. CJ
